I agree, text is awesome for quick communication and/or talking to someone while at work, but if it's the only form of communication you use in your life you are missing out on "genuine human interaction".
I think guys are thinking if they call a girl that she's going to want to chat for hours. Sorry boys, but you're wrong. We don't all like to talk on the phone for hours, but maybe we just want to *gasp* hear your voice or understand your sarcastic jokes. Get with the program guys. Stop being lazy and man up.
(My deepest apologies to those of you who actually call girls. These other dudes are giving you a bad rep.)
Technology is a wonderful tool, yet it always carries with it the burdon of two purposes. I agree that text messaging was meant to be a convenient tool for communication, but somehow it also became a wall to hide behind.
ReplyDeleteAs a male, this disappoints be greatly. Without even getting into the current state of the gentleman, I think it's sad that a lot of young bucks out there (and actually some of the older ones, too) have lost the ability to engage someone on a level beyond reading words off an LCD screen.
Have you ever noticed how it's easier to type what you feel than to say what you feel? I think a lot of guys hide behind the safety of text messaging. After all, it's "easier" to line up a desperate rendevous or face rejection over text messaging than it is in-person. Sometimes I just want to shake my fellow hombres out there and tell them to man-up.
And let's be fair. It's not only guys. Women hide behind the same walls that's available to them through texting. In my latest dating escapades, I've realized that some girls are phone girls and some girls are text girls. I've also been told that once their method of communication was determined, that a guy should abide by that realization. I promptly called bull shizz on that notion.
To me, there's something exhilarating about the feeling you get before you call a woman for the first time. There's something to be said about building your courage, calming your nerves, hoping for the best and preparing for the worst. I enjoy every laugh, every awkward moment and every second I spend trying to interpret the inflection in her voice. Why? Because it's "real." For better or worse, when I call someone, I've made a "real," interactive connection, regardless of the outcome.
Life's too short to settle for electronic messages when you could have something "real." Sure, I rock my unlimited text plan like the best of em', but when it comes to something that requires better attention, I try to make sure I don't waste an opportunity on a god-forsaken QWERTY keypad.
In closing, I want to throw out a quote that I love from the first season of Californication. Hank Moody goes on one of his signature, calm tirades and near the end of it, he says, "And people don’t write anymore, they blog; instead of talking, they text; no punctuation, no grammar. LOL this and LMFAO that. You know, it just seems to me that it’s just a bunch of stupid people psuedo-communicating with a bunch of other stupid people in a proto-language that resembles more what cavemen used to speak than the king’s English."
Whoever this is needs to keep commenting on my posts because I thoroughly enjoy reading them. I also think you should start your own blog - I'd subscribe to it. The part you wrote about people no longer writing and now blogging...I'd write a novel, but I don't have time and am probably not a skilled enough of a writer for it to become published. I would, however, host a talk show if you know anyone who'd hire me. It would probably be a mixture between the Tyra Banks Show, Talk Sex with Sue Johansen (Sunday Night Sex Show), and Between Two Ferns with Zach Galifianakis. Intrigued? Also, please identify yourself or at least give me a hint. The anonymous thing is driving me bonkers. :)
ReplyDeleteThank you, Emily. I'm glad you enjoy my goofy responses. Your blog entries are an interesting female perspective and fun to comment on. I actually have my own blog (I used to have two but shelved one for the time being).
ReplyDeleteThe part about the blog in the Hank Moody quote isn't something I necessarily agree with ... it was just a part of the quote. Personally, I think it's great that blogs are so readily available to anyone who wants to say something or express themselves. The human experience is SO vast and diverse. Stream-of-conscience writing is so provocative because it can be so raw and fresh.
I don't know you well enough to make umbrella judgments, but my initial impressions of you would lead me to believe that you'd totally rock at hosting a talk show. You seem astute and spunky ... great for that kind of gig. Is that a passion of yours?
Hmm. So who am I? It's certainly not my intention to drive a woman bonkers or play childish games, but I sort of like my anonymity on here. Isn't it better when guys retain a hint of mystery? Ha ha.
In all fairness, I have a feeling you'll be able to figure it out on your own eventually. Keep up the great entries.
Thank you! I'm more of an intellect, but part of me wishes I'd gone the e-media route(and then I could maybe be a talk show host haha). I need a creative outlet or actually, a few creative outlets to balance the monotony of my work day.
ReplyDeleteI have a few guesses as to who I think this is and one guess in particular I'm hoping. I am enjoying the mystery of it all. It's fun! (Even though I really want to know)
I guess I should probably put up another post now! I appreciate the comments. They make me :)
You know, every moment is an opportunity to change something. It's never too late and if you're into e-media, then get into it! Life is too short to not chase what you want.
ReplyDeleteHmmm. If you already have candidates lined up for who I could possibly be, then you're already off the beaten path, miss. I'll even bet you a cookie that I'm not the person in particular that you're hoping. By the way, I enjoy white chocolate macadamia (FYI for when I win this bet).
Looking forward to the next post. By the way, if the whole "anonymous-commenter-on-your-blog" thing becomes weird, let me know. No one likes to be "that guy." :)
Haha I was just saying the part about having an idea about who it is and also who I hoped it to be as a tactic to get more clues. I honestly have no idea who this could be. (So no cookies yet!)
ReplyDeleteNew post is up! :)
Hi. You don't have to necessarily post this ...
ReplyDeleteRemember the letters "AABFAIGI." It's a clue, as well as a way to tell me apart from anyone else that decides to comment as anonymous.
I'm 90% sure I know who this is now. Like "Matil" in Zoolander I would make a great "investigatory journalist." See you at the meeting tonight. Mwhahaha. Caught ya!
ReplyDeleteIf you're correct, I owe you a cookie of your choosing per the conditions set forth by my bet. However, if you're incorrect, it's white chocolate macadamia time pour moi.
ReplyDeleteAlso, what meeting are you referring to?
So ... what are my initials?
Spring Fling duh!!! The initials are JY! I got you mwahahaha.
