Is it possible for men and women to be "just friends?"

Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man

Have you ever been given the lines "I think of you as a friend" or "You're such a good friend, I don't want to ruin our friendship" from a member of the opposite sex?  Do you believe guys and girls can just be friends if they're attracted to each other?  Maybe acquaintances, but someone you talk to frequently is highly unlikely.  One of you is certainly interested.  The best thing to do in that situation is to be honest and upfront and then let the other person decide their boundaries.  I'm not an expert, but through observation, my own experiences, and in reading literature, it seems to be the most mature, humble, and respectable route to take.  No emotionally secure person appreciates being strung along.  Please feel free to comment with your own experiences and/or your opinion on the matter. When Harry Met Sally

  2. On the macro level, I think I'd have to say that men and women aren't meant to be "just friends." We all know that we're not biologically built that way. The funny thing about human beings as a species is that we seem to defy our instincts and biological wiring in every way that we can.

Any straight guy that tells you that he's never sized up his female friends as possible pursuits is lying. Even if for a split second, every female you meet and spend time with, at some point, is analyzed. I would assume that it's the same on the other side as well because that's just how we're all built.

Usually men and women end up as friends for a number of reasons. After all, the common denominator among both genders is that we're social beings. Just because a member of the opposite sex doesn't make the cut as a possible pursuit, it doesn't mean that SOME benefit can't be salvaged and forged (friendship).

Not even taking into consideration the MANY factors surrounding this concept (age, culture, etc.), friendship between genders isn't probable, but as evidence shows, definitely possible. Some male-female friendships can actually be unbreakable, while others are just a consolation prize for that which did not work out.

The interactions between men and women, I feel, will remain one of life's great unsolved mysteries.
